The Best Way To LIVER BIOPSY
Liver biopsy is a procedure where a small piece of your liver tissue is obtained and sent for examination. Not all patients with liver disease warrant Liver Biopsy. Your Liver Specialist or Hepatologist will look at your disease course – history and clinical examination, blood reports including Liver Function Tests and reports for HepatitisB, HepatitisC, Wilson’s Disease, Autoimmune Hepatitis and then take a decision on need for liver biopsy.
Why does Hepatologist advice Liver Biopsy?
- Reason for abnormal liver tests (Diagnose)
- Determine the stage of your liver disease (Stage)
- Determine the severity of your liver disease (Grade)
- Decide on need and success of the treatment (Treatment)
- If there is any suspected tumour in the liver (HCC Hepatocellular Carcinoma Liver Tumour)
- Unknown reason of fever
Is there different ways to carry out liver biopsy?
- Most common is via Ultrasound (Sonography) guided biopsy through the skin (Percutaneous)
- Liver biopsy via neck vein (Transjugular liver biopsy TJLB)
- Endoscopy guided liver biopsy (EUS Guided) – Latest Method
What you need to know if you are undergoing a liver biopsy
- Tell doctor of all the medicines you are taking so that if some medicines needs to be stopped, it can be planned and stopped at the right time
- You will need fresh blood tests to be done before liver biopsy Platelets Hemoglobin ProthrombinTime INR Creatinine
- You may have to fast for 4-6 hours depending upon the requirement of your Hepatologist or Radiologist
- You might have to stay for observation for few hours in Daycare or Indoor Admission
What care you should take after biopsy?
- You will have to lie on your right for 4 hours
- You will be able to take full diet after 4 hours of procedure
- You will not be able to drive home by self on same day if sedation had been given
- You may need a short term analgesic medicine
- You can take a full bath and take off the bandage next day morning
- Avoid lifting heavy weight for a week
Is there any complications
As it is an invasive procedure, there is some risk of complication. However, the risk is very low (<1% ). You might feel some soreness over the site for a day or two. There is rare chance of bleeding or injury to surrounding organs. Most of the centers now perform biopsy under Sonography guidance and hence the risk is reduced even further.
