Awareness of Liver Disease, Symptoms and Ways to care it



Liver disease is the 10th most common reason for death in India. There is a rising prevalence of liver disease in Gujarat as well as rest of India. With the rise in the disease prevalence, there is also rise in awareness amongst doctors and patients likewise about the spectrum of liver problems.
However, there are lots of misconceptions about the clinical features of liver disease. People feel that when they develop gas, acidity, bloating, constipation, and diarrhea they are because of unhealthy liver. This is not true when you develop a problem with your liver, there is usually no symptom. Liver disease is asymptomatic till it reaches a progressed stage. When the disease is quite progressed, only then you develop jaundice, fluid in tummy, swelling of legs, blood in vomit, black colored stools, altered behavior and decrease in urine output.
In this case when there are no symptoms, you need to be cautious and get yourself evaluated for liver disease if you have any risk factor or likelihood for liver disease. If you have received blood transfusions in past, got repeated intramuscular injections, tattooing done or have had an unprotected sexual contact, get yourself evaluated. Also if you are diabetic, hypertensive, obese, having sedentary lifestyle or are having excessive intake of junk food, get yourself tested for Hepatitis B. Unwarranted unlicensed drugs taken for the sake of generalized well-being are now recognized as a major cause of liver injury and if you have had history of painkillers or any herbal products, get yourself tested for liver problems
